Check out the schools website

From term 3 onwards the council will lead school assemblies with a road safety message and behaviour for the following week.
At a recent council meeting the 10 students debated the multiple road safety issues that the school experiences on a daily basis. Students reached consensus that being safe and responsible pedestrians was the most important issue - and this will become the theme for term 4. Many council members had observed unsafe practices or behaviours of students as they walked to and from school, especially crossing the 4 lanes of State Highway 1.
I will meet with the council again in week 1 to help frame up the key weekly message, and how that may look and sound in the assembly, school newsletter and website.

Key Points
Behaviour of the Week
1
Riding is good for your health.
  • Riding is good for health and fitness
  • Riding helps reduce the number of cars around the school.
  • Riding is good for the environment.
  • Riding is fun.
  • Riding gets you in the practice of controlling a vehicle.
School Council to develop these. Remember they should reflect being safe and responsible riders.
2
Checking cycle safety.
Pt 1

(Take a bike up on stage to demonstrate the checks)

  • Check the frame is free of rust or cracks.
  • Is the frame the right size for the rider? When straddling the bike are both feet flat on the ground?
  • The seat is at a good height-toes touch the ground when seated.
  • Check the handlebars are tight and secure.
  • Are the brakes ok? Look at the brake pads-are they worn? Do they make good contact with the rims?

3
Checking cycle safety. Pt 2
  • Check the wheel nuts are tight and the wheels spin easily.
  • Do the pedals spin freely and are not loose.
  • Check that the chain is lightly oiled and not too slack, with about 5cms of movement up and down.
  • Check the spokes are not broken or missing, and that the wheels are not buckled.
  • Check the reflectors are visible secure and clean.
  • If there are shock absorbers, are they working effectively?

4
Helmet Safety Check: Inspection.
  • Is the helmet the correct size, with little or no wobble when fitted on the head?
  • Is the shell and polystyrene in good order-not cracked or damaged?
  • Are the straps in good order-not frayed, twisted or cut.
  • Look for a standards approved sticker.

5
Helmet Safety Check: Fitting.

  • Is the helmet firm on the head?
  • Use 2-4-1 to check
  • 2-2 fingers above the eyebrows, indicating where the helmet should sit
  • 4-4 fingers either side of the ears, indicating where the straps should sit.
  • 1- The chin strap should be so tight only 1 finger should fit between the chin and the strap.

6
Laws for cyclists.
  • Must have good brakes front and back.
  • Must have red and yellow reflectors
  • Must have a white light on the front that can be seen from 100ms, when riding at night.
  • Must follow the rules of the road, as a bike is a vehicle. So no cycling on the footpath, following the road signs, using signals etc.

7
Hazards for cyclists.
  • Loose clothing or equipment.
  • Objects on the road.
  • Poor or slippery road surface.
  • Other road users.
  • Weather conditions.
